Eistee, Mallets und das Vibraphone

Es wird allerhöchste Zeit für eine neue Ausgabe „Zu Besuch bei“ und endlich ist es soweit, wir haben es geschafft! Ich freue mich sehr, dass wir der „Meisterin am Vibraphone“ – Anna Morley – einen Besuch abstatten durften.

Bereits im letzten Jahr habe ich die in Berlin lebende Australierin Anna bei einem Heimspiel live im Alter Roter Löwe Rein in Neukölln erleben dürfen. Ein weiteres Mal sah ich sie vor kurzem beim Analogue Now Festival, wo sie mit dem Violinisten Kaio Moraes ihre musikalischen Fähigkeiten erneut unter Beweis stellte. Dann kam eine Mail, wo ich auf das neue Album „Treasure Pleasure“ und das Record Release Konzert am 17. Juni 2016 aufmerksam gemacht wurde. Es gab kein Zögern mehr, wir verabredeten uns zum „Hausbesuch“ und schwuppdiwupp stand ich mit Stephan vor ihrer Tür. Ding Dong.

Bei Eistee und Kaffee machten wir es uns in ihrer Küche gemütlich, um ein wenig zu plauschen, doch vorher wurde noch ein kleiner Blick auf ihr heimisches Studio geworfen. Keys, bauschige Schlägel (mallets), Trommeln, Seiteninstrumente, Drumcomputer und das sagenumwobene Vibraphone präsentierten sich in voller Pracht. Natürlich wollten wir was hören und so bekamen wir eine kleine exklusive Live-Performance geliefert. Wunderbar!
Ihr alle hattet ja nun nicht das Glück, dabei zu sein, aber! Am Freitag, wie schon erwähnt, findet im Neu West Berlin (Yorckstraße) das Record Release Konzert statt. Dort wird Anna mit kompletter Band auftreten. Wer an dem Tag nicht kann, wird weitere Gelegenheiten bekommen, siehe unten.

Interview mit Anna Morley

Hi Anna, please introduce yourself to our readers.
G’day everyone, I’m Anna, 33 year old Australian musician/composer living in Berlin.
For all the people which haven´t listen to your music yet: how would you describe the sound you create?
It’s generally pretty chilled and downtempo. In my music you can hear vibraphone and acoustic instruments mixed with samples including my voice, beats and electronic textures.

What do you miss most about Australia/Melbourne?
I miss my Mum, Dad and my family, the Australian nature, the beaches, driving on the left and the abundance of good asian food. I miss the city of Melbourne a lot, it’s a big part of who I am.
11 years ago you moved from far away Down Under to Barcelona. How it came to that, why Barcelona?
I was taking a year’s break from my percussion studies in Melbourne and went traveling around Europe when I passed through Barcelona. The city and culture somehow took a hold of me and after graduating from College I moved there.
After living there for 7 years you came to Berlin. What did this bring to your life, was it a good decision?
Absolutely! Berlin is a really inspiring and artistically challenging city. For me there’s just the right mix of creative flow and societal freedom that makes it great to live and work in as a musician.
You play heaps of instruments. Please give us an idea about which ones you rule.
Haha, well I don’t master any of them yet, but the instruments I like playing most are the vibraphone, keyboards, percussion and the violin.
Is there any instrument you would love to learn playing?
I guess I’ve always dreamed of being locked in a huge music store overnight and free to let loose. There are many instruments I’d like to try but at the moment I’m focusing on practicing the ukulele and singing. I find it really difficult to sing well whilst playing an instrument.
What fascinates you about the Vibraphone?
I think it’s the tone, the vibrato and the pedal sustain that really moves me about the vibraphone. For me it’s a perfect blend of keyboard and percussion families in one instrument.
So, music is your life. Why is that? Are your parents musicians, too?
Neither of my parents are musicians but my Uncle is a great pianist and composer. My Grandfather was also fierce on the goanna, so I’m told. I started to play music at a young age and it has always felt right for me.
Your new album will be released very soon (17.6.). Please tell us a bit about it. How long did it take you until it was finished?
Yes, I’m very excited for the release! The album is ten tracks and took around three years to complete. During the final stages I worked together with Thomas Prime from my new label (Cult Classic Records) and I’m very happy with the results.
