Taking the stage to set the despondent, and moodful night of music ahead, was UK-based singer-songwriter Nadine Khouri. Amassing enough heartfelt energy with only her heavily-delicate voice, and searingly plucked, guitar lines, the Lebanese folk-singer treated the early crowd to tracks from her 2017 LP ‚The Salted Air‘, in addition to a lot of new tracks. Her songs tip-toed around with a breezy, emotional-blues sound, more aligning her to a deeper Ani DiFranco-like comparison, albeit still sticking to her own, resolute and unique sound. All of this, stirring the crowd for easily one of the most talked about bands of the year, and with great reason.
The sweeping, fuzz overtures that have set the tone for the trio’s latest, and arguable greatest LP, ‚Double Negative‘, were in full effect at Low’s sold-out, mid-week concert in Berlin. Draped in shallow, mood lighting, the Sub Pop band floated straight into the new album’s grind of slowcore, epic tracks with guitars soaked in distortion, and decay. Singer and guitarist Alan Sparhawk, channeled rivers of washed out, reverberated noise through a couple of practise-sized speakers, and a modicum of pedals, while Mimi Parker, on drums, ringed out muted, compressed and hallowed percussion – that resonated across the auditorium’s walls. Newer tracks from ‚Double Negative‘ such as ‚Fly‘ and ‚Always Trying to Work it Out‘, had the audience enwrapped, singing along and swaying, and sat neatly in a set that featured older greats such as ‚Nothing But Heart‘, and ‚Plastic Cup‘.

Classic material was treated to a gentle washing-over of fuzz, as Sparhawk and Parker’s harmonies tied the music, to the slow and emotive outpouring. Delivering such a perfectly timed, and mesmerising set, Low played 90 minutes before treating the crowd to an immediate encore of ‚Laser Beam‘, and the primal, cathartic outcry of ‚Murderer‘, with Sparhawk’s somehow poignant singing of “…you must have something more important things to do”. We don’t. Our time is yours, and always will be. As the world becomes a more darker, and confusing place, so do the sounds and timbres of Low’s musical output. Singer-Songwriter Nadine Khouri gab am 9. Oktober 2018 im Festsaal Kreuzberg den Auftakt zu einem melancholisch und emotional geladenen Abend. Die in Großbritannien lebende, libanesische Folksängerin brauchte nicht mehr als ihre extrem zarte Stimme und eindringlich gezupften Gitarrensounds, um eine andächtige Stimmung zu erzeugen und neben jeder Menge neuem Material belohnte sie die früh Anwesenden mit Tracks von ihrem 2017 veröffentlichten Album ‚The Salted Air‘. Ihre luftigen, emotional-bluesigen Songs erinnerten irgendwie an Ani DiFranco, wobei Nadine Khouri’s eigener, resoluter und einzigartiger Sound nie verloren ging. Mit ihrem Repertoire brachte sie die Menge in die richtige Stimmung für eine der, aus gutem Grund, meist gepriesenen Bands des Jahres.
Die umfangreichen, rauen Ouvertüren, die für das neueste und wohl beste Low-Album ‚Double Negative‘ den Ton angeben, zeigten während ihres ausverkauften Konzerts an jenem Dienstag ihre volle Wirkung. In seichtes, stimmungsvolles Licht getaucht, schwebte die beim Sub-Pop Label beheimatete Band geradewegs in ihren Mix aus langsamen, epischen Tracks und verzerrten Gitarren. Sänger und Gitarrist Alan Sparhawk jagte verwaschene, reverb-getränkte Soundströme durch ein paar handliche Boxen und ein Minimum an Effektpedalen, während Mimi Parker am Schlagzeug gedämpfte, komprimierte Percussion ertönen ließ, die im gesamten Saal die Wände zum schwingen brachten. Neue Tracks von ‚Double Negative‘ wie ‚Fly‘ und ‚Always Trying to Work it Out‘ wurden von einem in Gedanken versunkenen und schunkelnden Publikum lauthals mitgesungen und waren neben älterem Material wie ‚Nothing But Heart‘ und ‚Plastic Cup‘ perfekt ins Set eingebettet.

Neben sanft mit Fuzz-Effekten gespickten Klassikern verliehen Sparhawk und Parker der Musik mit einer umfangreichen Harmoniepalette ihren trägen und emotional geladenen Charakter. Nach einem 90-minütigen, hypnotischen und perfekt eingetakteten Set bekamen die Fans zum Dessert ‚Laser Beam‘ und ‚Murder‘ serviert, nach denen sich Sparhawk fast schon melancholisch mit „…you must have something more important things to do” („ihr habt doch sicherlich Wichtigeres zu tun“) verabschiedete. Haben wir nicht. Unsere Zeit gehört euch, und wird immer eure sein. Genau wie die Welt, in der wir leben, wird auch die Klangwelt von Low zu einem immer düstereren und konfuseren Ort. Mehr als ein Katalysator des Wandels bietet sie uns einen dunklen Spiegel, in den wir wie in Trance bereitwillig hineinstarren.
‚Double Negative‘ stellt die perfekte Ansichtskarte unserer Zeit dar und Low’s Performance des Albums mit seiner wunderschönen, rauen Düsterkeit lieferte die ideale Kulisse dazu.
